Hawaii is coming to New York for the 20th annual Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge, hosted by New York Outrigger. Nearly 550 athletes from New Zealand to France will race outrigger canoes in a 15-mile course adjacent to the World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty while a festival on the pier features island-themed activities.
As one of the world’s most competitive outrigger races, the regatta will transform the waterways into a dramatic urban stadium for an international competition to share the island culture with New York City.
As the East Coast’s largest Pacific Islands festival, which is anticipating 10,000 attendees this year, guests will enjoy a variety of Polynesian music as well as local food trucks and a beer garden. Keiki (children) of all ages will enjoy hands-on activities including lei-making, hula lessons and storytelling.
Appearing for the first time is H?k?le’a, the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s legendary canoe that has been sailing across the Earth’s oceans since 2013 to grow the global movement toward a more sustainable world. Arriving in New York City for World Oceans Day a few days prior, H?k?le’a will be docked at Pier 26 during the festival.
