Full Article: Catamaran Racing, News & Design – Alter Cup 2018 to be raced in Weta Trimarans,
It was at a lovely dinner party in the year 1778 that the idea of the Epsom Derby, which was so named because The Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury flipped a coin to see who would be given the honor of naming the event. Because we all go to see Derbys these days instead of Bunburys, it’s pretty obvious who won, and out of that came the event known as the Epsom Oaks.
This particular race is a little different than the Epsom Derby proper. The reason that it was dubbed the Epsom Oaks first off is ebcasue the meeting to establish this event was held on the Earl of Derby’s estate “The Oaks”, a piece of land that resides in Carshalton.
What exactly is the biggest difference between the Epsom Derby and the Epsom Oaks? They are held on the same properties, but the Epsom Oaks is open to three year old thoroughbred fillies. A filly is a female horse that hasn’t quite reached four years of age yet. The male equivalent to a filly is a colt.
What does this mean exactly? One thing that makes a difference is consistency or lack thereof. What we mean by this is that you won’t have the same horses on the track every year. This makes it extremely difficult for people to place bets on the horses because it’s hard to tell which ones will be best during which season. There is no predictable pattern aside from the riders.
The Oaks is one of two races that are limited to fillies, the other one being the 1,000 Guneas. Another thing that will make this race a little tougher than normal is that it’s much harder to control such a young horse. That doesn’t mean there aren’t people that can do it, but it does make the race a little more challenging. Interestingly enough, the first winner of this event was a Filly named Bridget, who happened to be owned by Lord Derby.
So far, the oaks bave been responsible for spawning many different events that span the globe, some of which include the Irish Oaks, Preis der Diana, and the Oaks d’Italia. As you can see this race has had quite an impact on the entire world, after all it’s not every single day that a name, or event defines a sport for generations to come.
If you wish to obtain more information there are a few things you can do. You can visit the Epsom website to learn about the different events that are occurring.
