America’s Cup: Can’t lose the plot now:
Jim Farmer (NZL) has history in the America’s Cup. He served as a director of Team New Zealand from 2004 to 2013, was a member of the Challenger Commission for the 2007 Cup and a member of the International Committee that investigated safety rules following the death of Andrew Simpson for the 2013 Cup. But he’s now not a happy observer. Here he sounds off.
The achievement of finally winning the Cup back earlier this year was of course a superb team effort and the fact that Team New Zealand chose not to nominate Peter Burling for an individual award at t…

I Cant Sleep What Do I Do
Sometimes you won’t be able to sleep because you’re just trying too hard to sleep. Have you ever considered that the reason that you can’t sleep is because you are just trying to hard? Maybe your focus is in the wrong place. For example, if you’ve had a hard time sleeping in the past, like last night and the night before… the next time you go to bed, you’ll be thinking “Darn! Why can’t I sleep? It’s time to sleep, sleep, sleep!”
You’re trying too hard. And your also worried that because it took you like 2 hours to fall asleep last night, that it will take just as long tonight, maybe longer. So it’s like you have very little confidence in your ability to sleep, and you’re reinforcing the notion that though you will try, you just won’t be able to fall asleep. Darn it.
Well, you might also have the problem of worrying too much about your problems. If you think about it, there’s nothing productive you can do while your sleeping, so it’s best to just try to leave your problems away from your bed where you’re sleeping. Don’t go to bed until you’ve un-messed the stress.
If you’ve got something big on your mind, it’s a good idea to try to define what it is you are worrying about before you go to bed so that you don’t keep dwelling on it while you should be sleeping. Figure out what it is exactly that you are so stressed about, and write down an action step you can take so that you will know what to do about it tomorrow. Who do you need to talk to, where do you need to go? I Cant Sleep What Do I Do
If it is something that is not within your control, then just do your best to let it go. At least when it’s bedtime. You need to get your sleep so you will be rested and have energy to deal with the problems of tomorrow. How stress wants to destroy you, take away all your energy, and what you can do about it.
It seems that we often spend the majority of our energy on the idea of avoiding that which we fear will be a hard job. Talking to someone, dealing with a task. We seem to direct all our focus on the idea of trying to put something out of our mind so we don’t have to deal with it, rather than just dealing with it and then being done with the stress! When it’s time to sleep, it’s time to sleep. Leave everything else outside your bed, and think about sleep. There’s really nothing else to do.
You might be helped by reading a boring story book or something like that for a few minutes before heading to bed. Sleep preparation is really underrated in my opinion. People talk about Counting Sheep and stuff as a technique of falling asleep, but they don’t talk very much about how to get in the right mode and mindset before going to sleep.
