The annual Western Cape Provincial Sailing Championships will be held in Saldanha Bay this Easter weekend, 25 to 28 March 2016. It attracts sailors from across the country, from all disciplines and skill level, as well as the county’s cream of the crop.
The event will be hosted by Vogelvlei Yacht Club, and partnered by Saldanha Bay Municipality, Saldanha Holiday Resort and the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs & Sport (DCAS). The event is sponsored by Southern Charter Wealth Managers, as part of its annual Southern Charter Grand Slam Series of four professionally run, competitive events across the Western Cape. This year it will also incorporate the National Championships for both the 29er and 505 class dinghies, both high performance, fast paced boats. Our majestic multihulls comprising of Hobies, Tigers, Mosquitos and Tornados will be showcasing their skills on this beautiful stretch of water.
Approximately 350 to 400 sailors are expected to participate with fleets ranging from 5 to 30 boats per class. The showdown takes place on the beach front at Dial Rock with the Saldanha Holiday Resort as its base. Spectators are welcome to watch from the beach and are guaranteed of a spectacular sailing experience. Two of the three courses being sailed, will be rotated on a daily basis to ensure that spectators are able to view all Classes racing a course around buoys in the Bay.
South African Sailing Western Cape (SASWC) has invited sailors from Qingdao, China to participate in this event, as part of the Provincial Sailing Exchange program, facilitated by DCAS. Five young Chinese sailors will participate in the Optimist Class and the delegation will also include their team leader and translator. The Chinese delegation arrives on Thursday 24th March.
The Opening Ceremony will be held late afternoon on Friday 25th at the Resort with an opening address by the Mayor of Saldanha Bay Municipality. On Sunday 27th, DCAS will transport the children, including the Chinese, to homes in the local community to share decorated Easter eggs which the children would have prepared on site, on Saturday. The Closing Ceremony and Prize Giving will be held on Monday 28th March at the Resort.
