The Last Hundred Miles:
Meg Reilly is a circumnavigator and winner of the 2013-14 Clipper Round the World Race who runs her own offshore sailing program – Ocean Racers – with partner Morgen Watson on their 40-foot Pogo 12.50. In this report she cautions how the final miles of any voyage are the most perilous.
Destroyed spinnakers. Mast track failure. Wind holes. Casualties. These are the kind of things we can expect in the last 100 nm of any offshore passage, and the longer seem to provide more severe sentences.

Many people believe that President Bush’s two wars; Afghanistan and Iraq were failures and that this is what severely hurt the GOP and made it impossible for them to win the next Presidential Election. Indeed, the way the media portrayed these conflicts did hurt the Bush Administration’s credibility, and yet, it appears although the American Public cannot stomach long wars, their strategy did work in Iraq, as we now see. And the Afghanistan conflict will soon be over with victory, which Obama will take credit for.
Political pundits still believe and one said to me just the other day; “These two wars helped to cripple the Bush presidency and end the GOP ascendancy.”
The left attacks, along with the domestic and world media plus, the extreme costs to fight a politically correct war on a long drawn out time table poisoned the American people’s minds. That’s to be expected. But, to blame President Bush or to claim that it’s his fault for staying the course that the GOP lost the election is not exactly so, that would be the media’s fault for being so left-wing biased. Still, the political pundit retorts;
“Yet, at the highest levels of the party, one hears no serious questioning of the ideology that produced these wars.”
Oh, here they go again! The war was unjust they say, but that is not true. The cause of the Iraq War is simple; “Fascism” of dictator Saddam Hussein, who acted like a reincarnated Machiavellian prince, who lived to create these conflicts; 13 broken UN Resolutions. Slaughtering of the Kurds, threats of WMD and attacks on US and Allies, and failure to reveal or allow inspections.
Next, the political pundit suggests that the GOP lost because; “McCain has pledged to stay in Iraq until “victory” and send 10,000 more troops to Afghanistan.”
Smart man, in the end he was right wasn’t he? This is what Obama did, and guess what? He gets the credit, after all that; politics and history are so interesting aren’t they?
