J/70s Head South for Winter:
Fifty-three J/70 teams traveled to Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, Florida for the first event of the 2016-2017 Quantum J/70 Winter Series on December 10-11. Basking in sunshine and breeze between 10-18 knots for seven races, Marty Kullman on Reach Around finished strong to secure the weekend victory with 13 points.
Kullman was able to discard a 15 from the opening contest, and added in four bullets. Bruno Pasquinelli’s Stampede took second place with 19 points, followed by Darby Smith’s Africa with 35.
The 23-boat Corinthian division was topped by Andrew Loe.

Coville Crawls North in Record Attempt:
(December 11, 2016; Day 34, 21:23 UTC) – Thomas Coville (FRA) and his 31m maxi trimaran Sodebo Ultim’ has yet to wander too far from the South American continent in his attempt to break the solo round the world record. Crossing into Brazil today, his 24 hour run of 457.8 nm decreases his margin to 1651.66 nm (-41 nm) ahead of the current record pace of 57d 13h 34m 6s set by Francis Joyon (FRA) on the 29.8m trimaran IDEC in January 2008.
