Pregnancy is unfortunately often accompanied by morning sickness regardless of whether you want it or not. There are also a myriad of symptoms that accompany nausea and vomiting. It is easy enough to treat most of the symptoms, however some symptoms will require medical attention. Any symptoms that worry you should be discussed with your doctor. We will be discussing the best way to treat some of these symptoms of morning sickness.
Morning sickness’s most common symptoms is a change in your normal appetite. Everyone has certain foods they prefer over others, but when you are pregnant and start experiencing morning sickness symptoms, this can change radically. These can be cravings for salty food or maybe having a preference for cold foods or hot beverages. Keeping down certain foods with the symptoms of nausea and vomiting may become difficult. After awhile you may find that it is easier to drink beverages than most solid foods. Make sure, however, that you are getting all the nutrition you need. Try getting a juicer and you can drink fruit and vegetable juices. Fatty foods and even spicy foods have been found to sometimes make morning sickness worse, so you may wish to avoid these. A very small portion of the population will experience symptoms so bad that medical attention is necessary. If you have severe nausea and vomiting, cannot keep down any food at all, if you are dehydrated, have an increased heart rate or you are losing weight, these are all signs that you should immediately seek medical help. You will hear your physician call this condition hypremesis gravidarum. If your symptoms are more on the typical side you need not concern yourself with this condition as it really only happens in less than one percent of pregnancies. Don’t hesitate to call your doctor if you are worried about this.
One morning sickness symptom that is not exactly common but that can be quite disturbing when it does occur is called pica, the desire to eat non-food items. It is normal for pregnant women to have changes in appetite and to crave new foods and develop aversions to others. In a few cases, however, it also causes women to have the urge to eat non-edible foods. This can be just about anything including paper, dirt and even pencils. There are lots of theories about Pica including the thought that it is the body’s way of making up for a nutritional deficiency of some sort. You should call your doctor immediately if you start to experience the symptoms of Pica, and while you are waiting to be seen, do what you can not to eat items that are not actually food, especially when you are pregnant. Pica isn’t a wide spread morning sickness symptom but it happens to some women so don’t get scared if it happens to you–just get treatment for it as quickly as possible.
Any woman who has been pregnant and had symptoms of morning sickness has longed for the day that it is over. It doesn’t last long, but that knowledge doesn’t help much during the pain. Your doctor should be contacted for severe symptoms, but many can be treated with home remedies.
