New leader at Star North Americans:
Los Angeles, CA (August 17, 2018) – The second day of the Star North American Championship completed two more races (3 and 4) in 8-11 knots of wind from the southwest. The sea was quite a bit more choppy than yesterday which made for some challenging steering for the helmsmen.
Eric Doyle and Payson Infelise continued their winning ways in race 3. They were fast and smart, which is deadly. Charlie Buckingham, fresh off qualifying the USA for the 2020 Olympics in the Laser class, sailed a great race with crew Jamie Buchan to finish second and Peter Vessella/ Phil Trinter rounded out the top 3.
Tight at top of Snipe Women’s Worlds:
Newport, RI (August 17, 2018) – Sailors finally were able to stretch their legs as the breeze built during the second day at the 2018 Snipe Women’s World Championship. The Portuguese-American duo of Mafalda Pires de Lima and American Kathleen Tocke dominated the day with two firsts and a second, jumping the pair from eight place to take over the lead.
The wind was so incredibly stable that building leverage on the corners of the course never paid off. The leaders of the fleet were patient waiting for tiny shifts, and found that playing the current often trumped wind speed. Current was running strong up the course and made time and distance to the line very challenging.
