For the 34th America’s Cup, the initiative was to reach beyond the core sailing audience and expose the broader public to the oldest international sporting trophy. But the America’s Cup isn’t NASCAR, and its fans aren’t ordering Coors Light. When the trophy travels in a Louis Vuitton case, and flies in the main cabin, this isn’t a trophy for the people.
So when the America’s Cup moved from San Francisco to Bermuda, it was as much a geographic shift as it was a philosophical shift. The America’s Cup was returning to its roots – the Moët & Chandon crowd.
