(March 19, 2019) – Attrition continues in the 800nm Newport Beach To Cabo San Lucas International Yacht Race as Tom Holthus’ Pac52 BadPak and John Sangmeister’s SC70 OEX have retired. That leaves 25 of the 30 entrants continuing to the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Provisional leaders are Peligroso (Kernan 70, ORR1), Pywacket (Andrew 70, ORR2), Fast Exit (Andrews 40, ORR3), Horizon (SC50, ORR4), and Chubasco (S&S 67, ORR5). The elapsed leader, Tom Barker’s Swan 60 Good Call, is estimated to finish today at 20:15 PDT. Details.

Why does Stanford have varsity sailing?:

I was shocked to read that Stanford University had fired head varsity sailing coach John Vandemoer in the wake of a federal investigation into shady college admissions practices nationwide.
Authorities allege that Vandemoer accepted more than $ 600,000 in donations to the sailing program in exchange for agreeing to falsely designate Stanford applicants as elite sailors he was recruiting for his team.
