Record Setting Day for IDEC SPORT:
(January 2, 2016; Day 18) – Francis Joyon (FRA) and his five crew on the 31.5m VPLP-designed trimaran IDEC SPORT had a record setting day in their bid win the Jules Verne Trophy for fastest outright time around the world. While crossing Cape Leeuwin today, they set the fastest time to that latitude from the start and from Cape of Good Hope. The team is now 529.7 nm ahead of the pace to set a new overall record. Vendée Globe: Upwind in the Atlantic:
(January 2, 2017; Day 58, 18:21 FR) – In the ongoing upwind duel up the South Atlantic at the front of the Vendée Globe round the world race over the last 24 hours Alex Thomson has made a small but valuable gain against his French rival Armel Le Cléac’h.
With Le Cléac’h covering his rival as the pair raced eastwards at the latitude of Rio and just a little northwards, the British skipper of Hugo Boss has been able to close gauge, reducing the north-south lateral separation by some eighty miles.
The leaders have been sailing east to sniff out the trade winds. Despite sailing on port tack, the side on which he has no foil and so has less lift and traction than his rival…
