Hoyles cephalopods by MuseumWales
Cephalopod Collection of W. Evans Hoyle
From: National Museum, Cardiff
World travel was far from comfortable in the Victorian era. But this didn’t stand in the way of many adventurous crews who sailed to some of the world’s most extreme locations and returned with an astonishing range of previously undiscovered creatures. The Museum’s first director, W. Evans Hoyle (1855-1926), was fascinated by a class of mollusc called Cephalopoda [Squid, octopus and cuttlefish]. Material from his major studies between 1883 and 1912 form the backbone of the Museum’s important cephalopod collection.
