By now you probably have heard about the amazing body transformation that actors go through to prepare for action roles. Two such transformations that everyone has talked about and discussed to no end are the incredible workouts of the cast of the blockbuster “300” and the recent hit XMen Origins – Wolverine.
The cast and stunt crew for these movies had to be fit and athletic enough to handle the rigors of stunts, weapons and combat. Though they trained for combat, one consequence of the training was improved overall safety in the stunt work. These men were so fit that there were less injuries to report.
Actor Gerard Butler from the movie “300” explained his experience with his trainers this way, “Pretty much anything Mark Twight offered up was so difficult in the kind of way where you wish you had never been born – and even more than that, wished he had never been born.”
The now legendary “300” workout is not a workout in the traditional sense but a test after the training was complete. This workout was a crucible that some passed through and others still have hanging over them.
The “300” Workout Test:
50x Dead lift with 135 lbs.
50x Box Jump with 24 box
50x Floor Wiper with 135 lbs.
50x Kettle Bell Clean and Press with 36 lbs.
300 reps total
Butler commented that my idea of a workout is to “go until you are actually in fear of your life and then go further. Then, you do more.” he said, “It was preparation, too, for the mindset of King Leonidas”.
Actor Hugh Jackman was in pretty good shape before he prepared for his role as Wolverine. Having been down this road before with the series of XMen films, he knew what was in store for himself and was up to the challenge. The character is strong without being bulky so strength training and mass training was broken up into two phases.
Muscle Phase: Hugh Jackman’s trainer focused on tempo to force Jackman’s muscles to adapt. This forced his muscles to grow. His tempo was three seconds up and one second down. The motion stimulated muscle fiber and growth hormones to put on a lot of lean mass.
Strength Phase: Heavy weights with no regard to tempo allowed tremendous strength gains. The muscle phase allowed for increased muscle mass that it made these weights seem lighter.
The intense workouts helped him burn fat he as well during each phase of the workout.
Ryan Reynolds started off as a skinny actor as did Will Smith. His workouts started off with sit-ups. Compound weight training for bulking up involved a variety of exercises of about 8-12 reps, for six days a week.
Reynolds swears by the rule that 80% of the results come from your training diet.
He attributes his fantastic eight pack abs to eight to ten small meals during workouts and no carbs after eight p.m. Ryan plays Deadshot in the Wolverine film.
If you want to develop a superstar body you need to combine diet and exercise in the right proportion for your unique physique.
