How to Stay Ahead:
By Tim Herzog, Sailing World
Holding on to a lead can be as much about your mindset as it is your speed or tactics. Being at the top of the fleet is daunting, but keep your thoughts in check and focus on the little things.
I had one of the best high school sailing coaches in the country and one of the best college coaches, but boy, did they ever approach the start of practice differently. My high school coach placed our names on the board in order of where we currently stood on the team. My college coach intentionally put us in random order on the board. …

Open fires and wood burning stoves are having a renaissance as people realise the environmental benefits of burning sustainable wood for fuel. But wood burning is only an environmental alternative to other heating and cooking methods if the logs are properly seasoned and dry.
Damp logs, in particular logs that have not been stored properly will burn with substantially less heat and won’t but for as long. They will also produce more smoke, negating any environmental benefit from reverting to this more natural method of heating.
This is why log stores are essential for the user of a log fire or wood-burning stove as they keep logs dry and help them to season.
What is Log Seasoning?
A seasoned log is just wood that has been allowed to dry naturally in an aerated area so the maximum amount of water content is removed from the log. Seasoned logs burn a lot hotter than unseasoned wood, producing less smoke and are far more efficient as a fuel.
This is why log stores work so well. Often they have a slated design which allows the air to circulate around the logs which helps them season, Log stores are also roofed to prevent the weather from continually saturating the wood.
Positioning a Log Store
It is very important that a log store is positioned correctly otherwise there will not be enough air to circulate around the logs. The slatted panels of a log store are designed to allow the air to come through, while limiting the amount of rain that can seep in.
Avoid placing a log-store around a corner or in an enclosed area. Also face them away from the inclement weather as much as possible.
For the perfect seasoned logs that will maximise the heat they can produce they should really be stored/seasoned for between 6-12 months. This means that anybody using wood burning stoves or log fires needs to plan in advance â?? another reason why log stores are so important.
