Lots of travelers are being attracted by an alternative to Florida so as to enjoy traditional winter retreat, which makes it become more crowded and expensive. Cape San Blas, which is a famous winter destination, has plenty of attractions to offer visitors. Accommodations here are affordable from January and February. The climate here ranges from 50s to 70s, which is an ideal weather to play golf, go fishing, or boating.
Moderate temperatures in January and February (average lows in the mid to upper 40s and average highs in the mid to upper 60s) may not be quite as tropical as Miami, but for many it’s just fine for an escape from Chicago, Wisconsin, Canada or Upstate New York! Again, these are average temperatures, and I’ve seen days in the winter months where shorts and a sunburn were the order of the day. With the exception of the occasional winter storm front, most days will be pleasant and calling for a sweater or jacket at most.
If you choose to winter at the Cape, you will not have to wait in any lines at restaurants, you will have lots of space and peace and quiet on the beach, and you will not have to deal with traffic jams or crowded shopping centers! There’s lots of places to find people and things to do if you want, of course, too.
The Cape offers some great selection and value to guests who can take advantage of monthly rates. Most rentals offer a monthly rate for January and February. Utilities may be included, included to a maximum amount, or an additional fee. Some properties will allow an extension into the first two weeks of March if a guest books all 12 weeks. What is not always available or economical are rates for the full month of March or April. These months begin the family spring break season on the Cape, so winter guests are better off to come earlier in the season if price is a determining factor for your trip.
The beaches are gorgeous in the winter and many of the same activities enjoyed in other times of the year are still possible. Golfing, tennis, shelling, fishing, boating, birdwatching, hiking, walking, running, bicycling and stargazing are all common winter activities. Becoming involved in local community groups is also popular. Joining the library, visiting the Senior Citizens Center in Port St. Joe, and stopping by the Tourist Development Council office for a calendar of events are all good ways to get involved with other winter visitors and local residents alike. Some rental locations, such as Barrier Dunes, have clubhouses and host pot luck dinners or Super Bowl gatherings for winter guests.
Another possible option is Mexico Beach. Some of the homes there are one level, and they make it easier for those who need to avoid the stairs. Mexico Beach offers many activities for seniors. Just stop by their tourism office when you arrive and find out about events and activities for you during your stay.
Because of the pet-friendly beaches, the Cape is very popular with wintering guests who want to bring their dog along. Many of the rentals you will inquire about will happily allow you to bring your dog. Some accept cats, but not as many. If you wish to bring a cat, you should definitely plan early. Also, if you need some assistance from an elevator, many properties will feature that as well. Again, the supply is less plentiful for homes with an elevator, so do your booking as early as possible.
If you decide to come to Cape San Blas for the winter, you will have the bragging rights to all your friends stuck back up north. While you sit on your deck and watch the sun setting into the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico, they will be shoveling the snow off the driveway or trying to keep the fireplace going so the house stays warm. Of course the polite thing to do would be to not rub in the fact you are probably not wearing anything heavier than a sweater. But if you can’t resist the urge to gloat, well, we understand. Winters in paradise will do that to you sometimes!
