Broadband television provides a method to watch TV on PC monitors by choosing from the provider’s archive or directory. It is sometimes referred to as on-demand television. Most major networks offer the service in one form or another.
Users view programs by either using a media player to stream the video or by downloading the show to their computers. The industry has been more focused on streaming, with peer-to-peer networks becoming obsolete. Most services offer different levels of quality, including high definition, to allow viewers to select from a large variety of devices on which to play their shows.
Watching television on your PC is simple. If you know the website you would like to access, you simply type that URL in your browser window. You can also search by the name of your favorite program by adding the phrase, “Watch online” or “Streaming video” or a similar term. In some instances, you can access the programs directly from the network’s website.
Each network establishes the length of time it will keep programs in its archive. For hit shows, the time period may be as little as one week, which allows fans the opportunity to see a missed episode. Classic shows that are five years old or older may be offered for several months. Some networks cycle the shows, offering a series for a few months, retiring it, and then bringing it back at a later date.
Most online channels do not charge viewers to access their programs. Instead, they use banner ads or commercials to generate income to offset their costs. The ads are usually shorter than the ones run on broadcast television. Many sites also place them at the beginning of the program so that there is no interruption once the show begins.
While it is technically possible to stream videos at low connectivity rates, high definition requires faster speeds. As a general rule, the lower the speed and bandwidth, the lower the quality of the video you will be able to stream. Naturally, the quality also depends on the resolution of the monitor on which you will watch the program.
Not all services can be accessed from all countries. Copyright laws, content, and the rights acquired can limit access to one specific country or group of countries. However, there are providers operating in most countries or regions of the world, allowing many to watch TV on PC monitors. Not all, however, support the Mac operating system.
