World Sailing Speed Record Council Ratifies Alex Thomson Record:
The World Sailing Speed Record Council announced the establishment of a new World Record, Singlehanded Monohull and 60 ft Monohull 24 Hour Record. Alex Thomson (GBR), “Hugo Boss”, a 60 ft Monohull broke the previous record. On January 15 – 16, 2017, starting at 07:00:00 UTC on January 15, 2017, Thomson sailed a distance of 536.81 NM over 24 hours, averaging 22.36 kts boat speed. The previous record was set by Francois Gabert (FRA) aboard “MACIF”, a 30 metre Trimaran, December 9-10, 2012. At that time, Gabert sailed 534.48 nm with an average boat speed of 22.27 kts.

Alinghi Defends Extreme Sailing Series Title:
(January 23, 2017) – Following their victory in 2016, Swiss sailing stars Alinghi have announced their return to the Extreme Sailing Series™ in 2017 in defense of their title. Last year’s battle with arch-rivals Oman Air went down to the wire with the Swiss team’s season victory only confirmed in the penultimate race of the final Act, and now the team return for another slice of the action.
